Injury expert delivers upbeat Bruno Guimaraes update as Newcastle United ‘return date’ revealed

The initial scans on Bruno Guimaraes’ injury have provided “positive news” and Newcastle United can expect him back in early February.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

Guimaraes has grown to become an influential member of Newcastle United since his £40million move to Tyneside in January 2022.

Newcastle

The 25-year-old has been a regular starter for Eddie Howe’s side this season, and Newcastle’s only defeat in the Premier League came while Guimaraes was sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Unfortunately for the Magpies, they’ll have to cope without the Brazilian midfielder once again after he left the pitch in tears against Fulham last week.

Dinnery believes the ankle injury is not as bad as first feared but admits that Guimaraes is likely to miss out on both legs of the League Cup semi-final.

In the grand scheme of things, the initial MRI scan came back with positive news so I wouldn’t say that there’s significant damage there,” Dinnery told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

We’re certainly looking at weeks as opposed to months in regard to Guimaraes’ return.

It’s still very early on in his assessment, but early February looks to be the target date and the signs so far have been positive and promising.

Unfortunately, I don’t see him featuring at all in the League Cup two-leg semifinal.

So it is a blow for Newcastle but perhaps not as bad as initially worried.
