Insider ‘can’t believe’ Tottenham have ‘lost £60m’ that was ‘set aside’ for Martinez deal

John Wenham is “confused” by the lack of transfer activity at Tottenham following their interest in Lautaro Martinez in the summer of 2021.

Spurs insider Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels, is wondering if the club have “lost” the £60million reportedly set aside for the striker.

On 9 August, Sky in Italy reported Tottenham were prepared to pay £60million for Martinez, 24.

On 10 August, this site revealed Spurs had held talks with Inter over signing the Argentina international.

Wenham can’t believe the club has misplaced the £60million that was available in the summer.

“I wonder what’s going on at Tottenham,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It was only last summer we were heavily linked with a £60million bid for Martinez at Inter Milan.

“That was after all of our business was done. Was that the club just leaking stuff to push season ticket sales through, or was that money set aside?

“Because if the £60million offer was made, where is the money now? Why was someone not signed for 1 January?

“Have they lost £60million? I can’t believe that. Are we no longer interested in a striker? Multiple reports say we still want one.

“So what have they done with the money. We’re in a decent position in the table and could overtake Chelsea if we win our games in hand.

“I find it slightly confusing that we are in this phenomenal position and we aren’t spending this money that we seemingly had in the summer.”
