Insider issues ‘huge’ Winks claim after Tottenham transfer U-turn

Harry Winks could regain the form he found in 2019 after it was revealed he will be staying at Tottenham.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

As quoted by Sky Sports last Friday (31 December), Conte confirmed Winks, 25, “will stay” at Tottenham past this month’s transfer window, adding that the midfielder is a “reliable” option.

He has started two of Spurs’ last four league games after only starting one league game under Nuno Espirito Santo earlier in the season.

Wenham was delighted to hear Winks will be staying.

“Conte has admitted Winks is a reliable option for him,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s never said that about the likes of Ndombele, Lo Celso or Dele Alli. I think any talk of him leaving is now over.

“He has a contract until 2024 and he counts as homegrown so that adds value. There is a real challenge on Skipp in that midfield now.

“Huge credit to Winks. I couldn’t see a future for him before Conte arrived.

“He didn’t feature under Mourinho or Nuno. It will be good for him to stay at Tottenham now.

“We are constantly improving and looking to build a long-term project. I think Winks staying is really good news. I’m hoping and I think he can impress in the second half of the season.

“If he keeps working hard then who knows, maybe he could get back to how he played for us in the Champions League final when he was just brilliant, the best player on the night.”

Winks’ Tottenham contract expires at the end of the 2023-24 season.

He has so far made 13 appearances for Conte’s side in all competitions this term.
