Insider shares Unai Emery sack verdict as ‘catastrophic’ claim made

Unai Emery’s time in the Aston Villa dugout feels under threat for this time in his tenure at the club.

Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw at Sunderland extended their winless start to the season to six matches, after also being knocked out of the Carabao Cup at Brentford.

Matty Cash netted Aston Villa’s first Premier League goal of the season at Sunderland, with Morgan Rogers struggling for form and Ollie Watkins having not yet scored.

Emery struggled for reinforcements during the summer, with Aston Villa signing Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho on deadline day.

Aston Villa to keep ‘trust’ in Unai Emery

Amid their poor start to the new campaign, manager Emery has come in for criticism and the Spaniard could face the sack at Aston Villa if their current form continues.

However, as per BBC Sport, [23 September], Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty believes it would have to take something huge for Emery to get sacked.

I don’t see the panic button being pressed at all at Villa unless something absolutely catastrophic and unexpected happens,” McNulty claimed.

Unai Emery is a superb manager with an outstanding record and they will trust him to get it right.”

Emery led Aston Villa to the Champions League quarter-finals last season, but a final day defeat at Man United in the Premier League meant the club will play Europa League football this season.

That inevitably impacted the club’s transfer budget over the summer, and their profile to recruit players which has hindered their start to this season.

Emery must solve Aston Villa issues

Emery faces one of his toughest challenges in his managerial career to date, as without an influx of new signings over the summer, his squad is currently stagnating.

The Sunderland draw again showed defensive flaws and a lack of pace and creativity going forward, with Watkins’ goal drought a concern amid a lack of alternatives.

Aston Villa fans will cling onto the hope that Elliott and Sancho can make an impact having not yet started a match for the club.

The beginning of their Europa League campaign may provide a welcome distraction, but it could also increase the pressure on Emery, as Aston Villa are one of the favourites for the competition.
