Insider: Tottenham 28-yr-old gave Levy 'perfect reason' to sack Nuno

Nuno Espirito Santo’s decision to start Ben Davies as Tottenham lost to Manchester United may have earned him the sack.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Nuno, 47, was sacked by Tottenham on Monday morning after a brutal 3-0 loss to Man United.

The Portuguese chose to give Davies, 28, his first Premier League start of the season at the expense of Sergio Reguilon.

Wenham insists decisions like this gave Daniel Levy no choice but to fire Nuno after just 10 Premier League games.

“What was Ben Davies doing starting instead of Reguilon?” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“We had a settled back four who were solid other than that game against West Ham.

“It was Reguilon, Dier, Romero and Royal. To suddenly change that to face an out of form Man United team at home is so strange.

“What on earth is Nuno doing by changing our tactics to suit Man United?

“It was a very negative decision and Davies was awful as well. It was disastrous.

“He was at fault for two of Man United’s goals. If you want the perfect reason to sack Nuno, there it was.”

On Monday morning, a Tottenham source told Football Insider that Antonio Conte has already been sounded out about replacing the Portuguese.

It is now understood the deal to bring Conte to Spurs is “very close” with Spurs “very confident” of confirming the move.

In other news,  this pundit has tipped Tottenham to “make waves” in January after new Levy U-turn.
