Insider: Unai Emery putting Aston Villa stars 'under pressure' as behind-the-scenes images emerge

Unai Emery is wasting no time in imparting his intense philosophy to the Aston Villa squad.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider

Emery oversaw his first game in charge on Sunday (6 November) as Aston Villa beat Man United 2-1 – their first home win over United since 1995.

After the game DJ and music producer Nathan Dawe posted images on Twitter of the substitutes going through drills on the Villa Park pitch rather than their usual running exercises.

“He’s very time-crunched and wants to hit the ground running by implementing new philosophies,” Dinnery told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“By having these small-sided games you are immediately increasing intensity and promoting quicker decisions and faster movements. You are putting players under pressure to make those decisions quicker.

“Unai Emery may have only been in the job for just a short while but rest assured he’ll have been doing his homework in the meantime. He’ll have identified areas in that squad which need to up their performance.

“If one of those is to increase the tempo then these exercises and opportunities like this mean you are not wasting any opportunity to thrust your methodologies onto the players.

“You get that fitness in the legs and are able to impart some of those strategies that you want.

“It’s a different philosophy, you still get the minutes in the legs but it’s just delivered in a slightly different way.”

In other news, Aston Villa may be ready to rip up Philippe Coutinho’s contract after a major reveal.
