Ipswich Town hit by PR backlash and risk lost sponsorship as Nigel Farage visit sparks outcry
Championship club Ipswich Town have run the risk of losing sponsorship by allowing politician Nigel Farage into Portman Road for a stadium tour.
Reform UK leader and MP for Clacton, Farage, visited Portman Road for a tour on Monday and used the opportunity as a photoshoot for the party’s social media accounts.
Many fans and neutrals alike have hit out at Ipswich for allowing him into the stadium due to his controversial views and past remarks, after pictures showed him holding up their shirt and standing pitchside.
Ipswich have released a statement on X to insist that they remain apolitical as an organisation, while the Independent have reported that the club did not know about the tour, as it was booked through the stadium’s organisers, Portman Road Events.
Either way, the controversy is only set to affect Ipswich negatively, and they will surely regret not vetting their stadium booking process better, as the visit from Farage could have been easily avoided.
Ipswich must be full of regret for Nigel Farage blunder
It is certainly unusual to see an active politician inside a football stadium without being formally invited, especially one so divisive as Reform leader Farage.
Ipswich, like any club, will certainly not welcome the negative attention and backlash that has come with the visit and subsequent social media posts.

They are currently chasing promotion from the Championship under Kieran McKenna, with eight huge games to play as they aim to finish in the top two and return to the Premier League automatically.
Fans have debated on social media over whether the club could lose sponsorship for the blunder, with the likes of Halo, Umbro, Tingly Ted’s, Fleximize and MSC all clearly visible behind the politician on a post to Reform’s X page.
Former Everton and Aston Villa CEO, Keith Wyness, has exclusively told Football Insider that he does not think Ipswich have endorsed Farage because of how the Portman Road booking system works.
It certainly would have been a different, even more troublesome story if a Tractor Boys official had invited him to the club, but the point still stands that it is a controversy that the club could have done without.
Norwich mock Ipswich on X after Farage debacle
It has not taken long for Ipswich’s arch-rivals, Norwich, to wade in on the contentious debate, with a post on X that many have taken as a dig at the Suffolk club.
The Canaries’ official account posted a link to the stadium tour section of their website on X on Tuesday afternoon, with a caption that said: “Book a stadium tour of Carrow Road – new dates now available. Terms and conditions will most definitely apply,” alongside a grimacing face emoji.
Many Tractor Boys supporters have hit back at the post, with one saying: Maybe you should look to sell your tickets first before doing stadium tours,” while another took it lightly and replied: “I’m an Ipswich fan and we see what you have done here, fair play.”
The East Anglian derby is always a big one for both sets of fans, and the next instalment on 11 April could have an even more edge to it after this controversy.
