FC Rostov frontman Sardar Azmoun has revealed that he turned down a January move to Liverpool.
Azmoun has nine goals in 31 appearances for Rostov this campaign, including goals against Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
He’s even more prolific on the international stage, with 16 goals in 22 appearances for Iran.
He was seen as a good option for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds given his ability to play up top alone, or on the wing.
Before the winter transfer window even opened The Guardian reported that Liverpool were lining up a January move for Azmoun though nothing ever materialised.
Now, the Iranian himself has revealed to Qatari media outlet, SC.QA, that an approach was made by the Reds but he turned them down.
“I did not feel the time to move was right,” Azmoun said.
“I would have ended up playing a few games and then spent a great deal of time on the bench.
“I am sure I will be playing for a top European club in the near future.”
Azmoun also feared that he would have been a short-term solution for Klopp’s side – with Liverpool looking for cover for Sadio Mane while he was at the Africa Cup of Nations.
However, with Klopp looking to strengthen all areas come the Summer window, the Reds may come knocking for Azmoun again.
