'Is he allowed to re-join Rangers' - Celtic fans react on Twitter to Barton's lenghty ban from football

By Amir Mir

Joey Barton has been banned from football for 18 months after breaching betting rules – and Celtic fans on Twitter have seen the funny side of the story.

Sky Sports reported on their official Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon that the 34-year-old has been banned from all football-related activities.

He is currently playing for English Premier League side Burnley, who he joined during the January transfer window after leaving Rangers earlier on in the campaign.

Barton joined the Ibrox club in the summer on a free transfer, but his career in Glasgow never really got started, with his last match being the 5-1 defeat against Celtic in September.

He left the club following a training ground bust-up after that heavy loss, which saw his contract terminated by Rangers.

As a result, there is no surprise the Parkhead faithful did not sympathise with the player, who represented their rivals.

One fan jokingly asked whether he could still re-join Newco [Rangers], while others just simply laughed at his lengthy ban.

Considering his age and the length of the ban issued to him, it is likely that this period of absence from football could all but end Barton’s footballing career.

He was currently helping Burnley, who sit in mid-table in the Premier League table, secure safety in the top flight of English football.

But, now he is not allowed to kick a ball, manage, coach or be involved in any football-related activities until his ban ends or he gets it reduce on appeal.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Since returning to Turf Moor during the winter window, Barton had played 14 Premier League matches for Sean Dyche’s side.

He had found the back of the net on one occasion for Burnley and that was his first game back for the club when he struck a match-winning free-kick late on.
