'Is the trust there?' - Exclusive: McNamara doubts Gerrard relationship with Rangers player

Jackie McNamara questioned the strength of Steven Gerrard’s relationship with Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Celtic defender suggested that Gerrard’s relationship with Docherty could have been hurt by him rejecting his advice.

Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry recently revealed that Gerrard thought joining Peterborough on loan was the ideal move for Docherty to make, but he rejected the opportunity in a bid to fight for his place at Ibrox.

McNamara questioned if there was trust between Docherty and Gerrard based on the midfielder’s decision, but did admit the player was entitled to make up his own mind.

When asked if Docherty rejecting Gerrard’s advice hurt their relationship, McNamara told Football Insider: “Possibly, he’s wanted him to go somewhere and he has thought it’s not for me.

“You can ask, is the trust there? But the player is entitled to choose where he wants to go.

“He did okay at Shrewsbury last year on loan, I think he did quite well by all accounts so he probably thought he would have returned and got an opportunity.

“But that hasn’t proven to be the case.”

The 23-year-old midfielder has made only six appearances for the Gers this season and has racked up three assists in the process.

It has been reported that Docherty looks certain to leave Ibrox in January on loan once again after a successful spell at Shrewsbury Town last season.

In other Rangers news, Hutton says the club are facing a “massive loss” as a senior figure considers leaving the club.
