Noel Whelan has suggested the potential Leeds United signing of Jean-Kevin Augustin could collapse as he would struggled to pass a medical.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, Whelan delivered his verdict on the striker after the latest downbeat bulletin from the club.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Marcelo Bielsa revealed that Augustin would be absent from Sunday’s clash with Cardiff City with an old hamstring injury he has been unable to shake off.

It kept Augustin sidelined pre-lockdown and there are growing doubts it is a chronic problem.

The centre-forward signed in January on a loan-to-buy deal from RB Leipzig that is set to become permanent if Leeds go up.

There is now the possibility that Augustin’s loan will not be extended beyond 30 June until the end of the season and that his hamstring could provide a way for Leeds to wriggle out of a permanent deal.

“It’s troubling times for the young man and after working so hard to get back, there’s still that weakness in that area and it doesn’t look good. It doesn’t look good on a medical, put it that way,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“It is because it means it’s not healing properly, his body’s not healing the way it should do. I’ve had problems with hamstrings myself and it depends what sort of cut or tear you get.

“You’ve got to have people that are fully fit, you can’t have people who are getting injuries in the same place.”

Augustin has played just 48 minutes in three appearances since his arrival in the winter window.

He spent the first half of the season with AS Monaco, where he scored just once in 13 matches.

In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are braced for a near-£50million flurry of new signings.
