'It is amazing' - Exclusive: Kevin Phillips reacts to 'Huge' Leeds development

Kevin Phillips has claimed that Kalvin Phillips will be devastated to miss the remainder of the season for Leeds United with promotion so close.

However, the former Sunderland and West Brom striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, said that the 24-year-old should take comfort in the fact that he played a “huge part” in the club’s season up to this point.

The club confirmed yesterday that the defensive midfielder would be ruled out for up to five weeks with a knee injury sustained in the 1-0 victory against Swansea on Sunday.

Phillips has been a standout performer for the Whites this season and is in the conversation for the Championship Player of the Year.

He has made 40 appearances this season, shielding a defence that has kept the most clean sheets in the division.

When asked by Football Insider how difficult the situation was for the midfielder, Kevin Phillips said: “He will be gutted.

“To miss that final game when they do eventually get promoted and to not be a part of it will be devastating.

“But he will know that he has played a huge part this season.

“It is a little easier because there will be no fans there. From my experience when you do get promoted, certainly at home, it is amazing. That will make it slightly easier for him but he will be there on the sidelines.”

Leeds host bottom-of-the-table Barnsley next on Friday.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side just two wins away from guaranteeing their promotion to the Premier League.
