Jackie McNamara says that Jonny Hayes will be wanting to play in his natural wing role rather than operating as a makeshift full-back heading into the new season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Parkhead star insisted that it was unfair to keep swapping the 31-year-old from position to position, having seen him operate both in defence and midfield last season.
Neil Lennon has continued to use the Republic of Ireland international in a variety of roles in their current pre-season campaign, filling in as a left-back against St Gallen.
However, McNamara hinted that the former Aberdeen ace would be feeling frustrated at the way he is being moved around the park, stating that he looks best providing forwards with service from out wide.
Asked if Hayes would be Lennon’s first choice at left-back, McNamara told Football Insider: “We’ll need to wait and see but sometimes it’s a bit unfair on Jonny Hayes, playing different positions.
“I saw the match the other day and he was playing further forward, putting some crosses into the box. It suits him further forward, he can cover in at that area (left-back) if need be but I think for himself, he’ll want to play in his recognised position.
“Whatever happens, you need competition, people on form. They’ve got a lot of competitions they’re vying for.”
Hayes featured 22 times across all competitions during the 2018/19 campaign, failing to score and notching up just three assists.
The four-cap international has a total of 42 appearances under his belt for the Hoops, his only goal coming in a 3-0 victory over former side Aberdeen back in 2017.
