Noel Whelan has hailed Kalvin Phillips’ new Leeds United contract as “huge” and a “massive signing” for the club.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United forward insisted it is outstanding business from the Whites hierarchy and much deserved for the 23-year-old.
Leeds announced on Monday evening that Phillips has committed to a five-year contract after they had snubbed offers of £20million-plus from Premier League clubs during the summer.
“It’s a massive signing, huge,” Whelan enthused to Football Insider. “This is the best business Leeds have done all summer, all year, in fact.
“Without Kalvin Phillips the team would suffer and Leeds needed to reward him with a new and improved deal. He was probably the best player last season, apart from possibly Pablo Hernandez, and he has his best years ahead of him.
“He is so good now, he could go to a Premier League club and have no problem getting in the team. He is young, hungry, and his character, personality and ability is exceptional.
“He is the most valuable player at the club and the one Leeds needed to keep above all others. I’m delighted we’re keeping him, delighted for Kalvin and delighted from Leeds’ point of view.”
Phillips has graduated from the Leeds academy ranks to make 149 appearances for the club he supports.
He was transformed into a midfield anchorman by Marcelo Bielsa last season and was subsequently named in the Football League team of the year.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are set to lose loan star in the January window after developments.
