Kevin Phillips has tipped Marcelo Bielsa to stick with Kiko Casilla this summer even if Leeds United are promoted to the Premier League this season.
The former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, believes it is an area of “concern” but claimed the 33-year-old keeper has the full backing of his manager.
Football Insider revealed that clubs in the shot-stopper’s native Spain are keeping tabs on the goalkeeper ahead of a potential summer move.
Casilla kept an impressive 16 clean sheets in 37 appearances this campaign but made a number of high profile errors prior to receiving an eight game ban for racist abuse.
Phillips suggested Marcelo Bielsa would stick by his number one despite the inconsistent performances and FA charge.
“It is a tough one because he has come under the spotlight this season and made a few mistakes – that is in the Championship,” he told Football Insider.
“We all know if Leeds go up he is going to be put under a lot more pressure week in, week out in the Premier League.
“It would be a concern for me. He has made a few mistakes in the Championship and I think it is an area Leeds should look at.
“Bielsa believes in him though, has been very stubborn and has full confidence in him. It would be a tricky one to call.”
Illan Meslier, 20, who is currently on loan from FC Lorient, has stepped in on two occasions in the absence of the former Real Madrid goalkeeper.
Football Insider understands Meslier is in line to receive a permanent contract at Elland Road having impressed in his three senior appearances.
