‘It’s life and death’ – Keith Wyness is adamant over Tottenham financial bomb

Tottenham need to begin inserting relegation salary reduction clauses into player contracts as soon as possible.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after it was revealed Spurs don’t have salary reduction clauses in place if they are relegated.

Spurs have never been relegated from the Premier League, but they are currently just five points above the drop zone with 12 games remaining.

Igor Tudor has been placed in temporary charge until the end of the season after Thomas Frank was sacked following a run of poor results.

Tottenham should have ‘vital’ clause in player contracts

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – thinks all clubs need to have relegation clauses in contracts.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness states that Spurs would not be guaranteed to get promoted from the Championship at the first time of asking, if they are relegated.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Coming up from the Championship, we know it is no given, regardless of what people think or how big a club is, it’s never easy. And so not to have had those relegation clauses in, I think every club should have them in these days.

“And I know players think, well, if you’re signing me, I won’t sign if I’ve got to sign a relegation clause because we’ll never get relegated, will we? But I’m afraid that’s a vital clause that should be in every contract these days.

“And I think Spurs, if they haven’t got them, then every new player that’s signed from now on should have one in there, and they’ve got to start making that move, because we’ve seen it was 17th last year, and it can happen again quickly before you know it.

“Believe me, having been on the other side of it in the Championship, it’s absolutely life and death if you don’t have that clause in there.”

Tottenham could end Fabian Hurzeler pursuit

Spurs have cooled their interest in Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler becoming their next permanent manager, with the German fighting to keep his job on the south coast.

Hurzeler could be sacked amid the Seagulls’ poor run of form, and Spurs still have ambitions set on luring Mauricio Pochettino backed to north London.

Pochettino is expected to be available when his contract with the USA national team expires after the World Cup, and he has previously enjoyed a successful five-year spell at Spurs.
