'It’s obviously sad' – Flying machine regrets his time at Celtic has come to an end

Celtic winger Patrick Roberts has expressed his regret that his time in Glasgow has come to an end, after two and a half successful years with the club.

The 21-year-old was part of a Hoops squad which won two domestic trebles, but after two loan spells with the Bhoys the flying machine has returned to his parent club, Manchester City.

“It’s obviously sad that my time here has come to an end but everything comes to an end and I have a lot of really good memories of playing here” Roberts said, as quoted on the Hoops’ official website.

“The success this season has been incredible and I’m happy that the Celtic fans have had that, because they’ve been amazing.”

Roberts had been a bit-part player for the Hoops last season due to a long-term hamstring issue, and it is no real shock that he has elected to return to England to try his luck in the Premier League.

Roberts was a big fans favourite in Glasgow, but it is no shock he is returning south. Two and a half years is long enough for a player to spend at any club on loan. Also factor in the fact that he lost his place in the side due to injury, there was no guarantee the 21-year-old would be a starter for the Hoops next season. Roberts should have no regrets about his time with the Hoops though, as he was part of a squad that made history with back to back trebles. The injury is just one of these things that happens in football, and coupled with the form of James Forrest, Roberts was always going to struggle for game time this season. Hoops fans will watch with interest to see how he fares in the Premier League. It is unlikely that he will ever make the breakthrough at Manchester City, but such are his talents he could well become a fixture lower down the league table.
