Kevin Phillips has claimed he is “really worried” for Leeds United in the promotion race after Jean-Kevin Augustin’s injury and Patrick Bamford’s display in the defeat to Cardiff.

The former Sunderland and West Brom striker, who gained promotion five times in his career, told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs that Bamford’s form is a “massive worry” after the Augustin blow.

The January signing’s season is seemingly over after he suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury that has plagued his time at Elland Road to date.

Bamford, as expected, lead the line against Cardiff City but was heavily criticised for a lacklustre performance in a 2-0 loss.

Bielsa had no strikers on the bench and Phillips believes this is a huge problem going into the final seven games of the season.

“It’s a massive worry for them not to have a striker on the bench,” he told Football Insider.

“Who is going to score the goal to take them up to the Premier League?

“When you look at Fulham and Brentford – they have Mitrovic and Watkins. They have proven goalscorers in their squad.

“If Leeds lose to Fulham at the weekend I would really worry about them finishing in the top two spots.

“It is real worrying times for Leeds at the moment.

“All of the teams that I have got promoted in have had a striker that has scored 20 plus goals. I know West Brom have not had that but they have shared the goals out. Leeds are not doing that either so it’s a concern.”

Aleksandr Mitrovic of third-placed Fulham and Ollie Watkins of fourth-placed Brentford are the Championship’s top scorers with 23 and 22 goals respectively.

Leeds will look to make amends on Saturday when they welcome Fulham to Elland Road.
