Darren Bent has revealed he’s been “shocked” and “surprised” by Aston Villa signing Borja Baston from Swansea City.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Villa and Tottenham striker questioned the logic of recruiting a striker from a Championship club with a mixed scoring record.
Baston arrived on deadline day from Swansea to become the Premier League club’s fourth recruit of another busy window after they had earlier sealed deals for Danny Drinkwater, Mbwanna Samatta and Pepe Reina.
Baston will provide cover for Villa up front after they lost £22million summer-of-2019 signing Wesley Moraes to injury for the rest of the season.
“I am surprised. It’s shocked me a little bit,” Bent told Football Insider. “On deadline day people are scrambling around for bits and bobs and it might turn out to be an acute signing.
“But you question signings on the last day. I always find that on deadline day people pick up pieces they do not need.”
Baston will join Samatta, who scored on his debut in last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, in competing for the central striker role in Dean Smith’s side.
Baston was signed by Swansea for £15million in 2016 but has struggled to make an impact in English football.
He has scored seven goals in 41 appearances for the Swans, six of which have come in 21 Championship matches in the first half of this campaign, and this is his third loan spell away from the club after previous moves back to Spain at Alaves and Malaga.
In other Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED that a senior forward is unlikely to play for the club again after exit deal agreed.
