Exclusive: Pundit claims Rangers hit by 'Big, big blow' after update

Rangers have been dealt a “big blow” after Jermain Defoe suffered a hamstring injury in pre-season, according to Darren Bent.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England forward admits it is “unlike” the 37-year-old to pick up muscular problems thanks to his professionalism.

Speaking after the friendly win over Motherwell, Gerrard confirmed that veteran hitman had picked up a hamstring problem and that he would undergo the necessary tests to determine the severity of the blow.

Defoe was Rangers’ top scorer in the Premiership last season with 13 goals from just 20 appearances.

Bent admits it is a concern that Defoe has picked up a hamstring issue despite how well he looks after himself and insists he will be a big miss for Gerrard.

Bent told Football Insider: “It’s unlike JD and the one thing we know is it must be a genuine injury because one thing I know about JD is he looks after himself which is why he’s still playing at the level he is at the age he’s at.

“It’s a blow for Gerrard, he’s a top player is JD, always has been, fantastic, keeps himself fit and one of the most professional people that I know and to hear that is a big, big blow.”

Defoe has scored 25 goals in 52 appearances since joining Rangers on an initial loan deal back in January 2019.

He sat out all but one of the club’s last seven Premiership games with a calf injury.
