Ivan Toney reacts to Yoane Wissa after Brentford v Man United moment
Yoane Wissa scored his 18th Premier League goal of the season with Brentford’s winner against Manchester United on Sunday.
Brentford kept their hopes of a late-season European push alive with a 4-3 victory over the Europa League semi-finalists at the Gtech Community Stadium, and survived a late comeback in the process.
Mason Mount’s opener was soon overturned by a Luke Shaw own goal and the first of a brace of strikes from Kevin Schade, who made it 2-1 six minutes after the equaliser and netted his second in the 70th minute.
Schade’s second was quickly followed up by Wissa’s own strike on 74 minutes, and despite Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo’s late goals for Man United, Thomas Frank’s side saw out their close-run win.

Yoane Wissa continues career-best season at Brentford
Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo have been the talismanic figures for the Bees this term, and the Congolese international’s winner on Sunday drew him level with Mbeumo on 18 Premier League goals for the season.
Mbeumo has received the majority of the plaudits for his displays this season – and transfer interest from the likes of Man United – but it’s Wissa who is now Brentford’s top scorer in all competitions up front.
Player | Appearances | Starts | Goals | Assists | Yellow/Red Cards |
Yoane Wissa | 36 | 32 | 19 | 4 | 2 |
Bryan Mbeumo | 39 | 36 | 18 | 8 | 3 |
The 28-year-old’s goal against the Red Devils was struck home from close range after a Michael Kayode burst into the box to tee him up, and Wissa posted on Instagram (4 May) in celebration after full-time.
The post was liked by former Bees striker Ivan Toney, whose goal tally in West London has since been overtaken by Wissa, while his assister Kayode also commented to call his team-mate “King Wiss”.
Brentford braced for Yoane Wissa bids amid record season
As is the case with Mbeumo after his own performances this season, Wissa’s future in West London is set to attract transfer speculation aplenty this summer, with a number of Premier League clubs linked.
Former Man United scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in March that Nottingham Forest will be back in the market for Wissa after their failed pursuit in January, with a fee of at least £40million required.
Arsenal are another club keen on both Mbeumo and Wissa with the latter out of contract next summer, and while Brentford will be desperate to keep hold of the pair, their resolve will certainly be tested in the next few months.
