‘I’ve had enough’ – Man City fans fume at ‘abysmal’ starter who missed two big chances vs Sunderland

Man City fans have torn into their winger Savinho after he missed some big chances to score while they dropped points in the title race with a 0-0 draw at Sunderland.

Man City knew what they had to do on Wearside to keep the pace with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, after their 4-1 thrashing of Aston Villa on Tuesday.

Sunderland, though, were in no mood to let their unbeaten record on home turf slip on New Year’s Day, as City were held to a goalless draw at the Stadium of Light in an action-packed affair.

Savinho has divided opinion among their supporters ever since his 2024 move from Girona, with his output questioned after he scored just twice in 45 appearances last season.

The 21-year-old has already scored more than that in 2025-26, with three in 25 ahead of this clash, but he certainly should have added to that tally after spurning numerous great chances to break the deadlock against the Black Cats.

Savinho missed two big chances to score against Sunderland

City chose to keep Savinho in the summer despite widespread rumours of him being set to join Tottenham, but he has still been unable to nail down a consistent starting place so far.

The Brazilian winger was handed a chance from the off on the left wing on Thursday night, but did not leave a great impression as he missed two big chances to give Pep Guardiola’s side the lead.

Both opportunities came within minutes of each other just after the interval, as he blazed a shot from close range over the crossbar after Rayan Cherki had seemingly put it on a plate for him to score.

Savinho raced through on goal from the left flank not long after, but his weak shot was saved by Robin Roefs as he stuck out a leg, with the rebound put over the bar by Erling Haaland.

His evening came to a premature end as he went off injured in the 51st minute, with just three touches taken in the Sunderland box, two accurate crosses from six attempts, and no duels won all game.

City fans rip into Savinho for missed chances vs Sunderland

Savinho could leave City this month, as Guardiola does not see him as a regular starter in his side going forward.

It is easy to see why the Brazilian wideman is not fancied by his boss after such a performance, especially with Antoine Semenyo set to join the Citizens from Bournemouth soon.

Taking to X following the game, many City fans were critical of Savinho, as one said: “I can’t wait until Semenyo joins and starts over Savinho, I’ve had enough of watching him play.”

While another added: “Everyday I just wonder why this club didn’t take the 80m for Savinho.”

And another fan said: “There’s probably literal centre-backs you’d trust from 6 yards out over Savinho in a goalscoring situation.”
