Jack Butland axed: Rangers fans say the same thing about goalkeeper replacement coming in

Rangers fans want Liam Kelly to be given a chance as their first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Jack Butland after his latest poor showing against Hearts.

Butland has been Rangers‘ number one keeper ever since his move from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2023.

He made 58 appearances in his debut season at the club, then 44 last term as he battled some injury issues, while he has played 31 times already in 2025-26 for the Gers under Russell Martin and Danny Rohl.

While his performances have been solid on the whole once again in this campaign, Rangers fans have slammed Butland at times for some sub-par showings amid their struggle to compete with Hearts and Celtic.

They faced the former in a huge clash at Tynecastle on Sunday afternoon, and the 32-year-old was caught out as they lost even more ground on the league leaders.

Butland was culpable for both of Hearts’ goals vs Rangers

Hearts have been the Scottish Premiership’s surprise package this season, with nine points separating them and Rangers before Sunday’s clash in the capital.

A quiet first half saw both teams waste chances to go ahead, but it was the hosts who found the breakthrough after Butland’s loose pass gave away a corner and Stuart Findlay rose highest from the set-piece to score.

Four minutes later, and the blame lay at Butland’s door once more, as Lawrence Shankland’s shot fizzed past him at his near post to put Hearts 2-0 up.

Youssef Chermiti’s late strike reduced the deficit, but was not enough as Rangers dropped to fourth place following the weekend’s action.

Rohl rushed to defend Butland in his post-match press conference, saying: “Jack has got us a lot of points. Of course we’re not happy with the result but I would never put it (on him).”

Rangers fans want Kelly to start over Butland after his poor Hearts performance

Scotland international Kelly started over Butland towards the end of last season under Barry Ferguson, as doubts emerged around the 32-year-old’s future at Ibrox due to a string of poor performances.

He has been trusted to start the majority of games this term, however, with Kelly only featuring once so far against Alloa in the Premier Sports Cup, but Rangers supporters want Rohl to make a change in goal from now on.

Taking to X after Sunday’s loss, one fan said: “Liam Kelly should be chapping the managers door in the morning. Had enough of Butland. 3 years of howlers.”

Another said: “Time to give Liam Kelly an extended run in goal and Dujon Sterling at Right Back. Dump the 2 serial losers.”

While one supporter added: “Jack Butland’s mistakes done us today, so in the game he has cost us so many times. Give Liam Kelly a go.”
