Jack Grealish is facing the axe after wretched Man City campaign – sources

Jack Grealish is fighting to keep his place in the England squad after a dismal campaign personally at Man City, sources have told Football Insider.

There is a growing sense that the £100million winger could be the headline omission from the country’s Euro 2024 squad when Gareth Southgate makes his final cuts.

As a result of injuries and rotation, Grealish played 36 games across all competitions for Man City in 2023-24, averaging 58 minutes per game.

But he lacked cutting edge in those displays and he contributed just three goals and three assists from 2,114 minutes of action, which was in stark contrast to his superstar attacking teammates at the Premier League club.

Football Insider revealed in April that City are willing to listen to offers for the 28-year-old this summer, with a recent update stating that he would be open to a move.

Gareth Southgate named Grealish in his 33-man provisional squad ahead of Euro 2024, but will need to cut the numbers down to 26 before the tournament begins.

With seven players to drop out of the squad, he is fighting with wide forwards and attacking midfielders Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, James Maddison, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka for his place.

Southgate remained coy on Grealish’s position as he explained: “I don’t think we’re defining that just yet. I think we know where we’re likely to be. He has been really bright and he loves being here. He’s had a good energy about his training.

“We have a lot of good players in that area and they are all competing.

“We think we know who the best have been across the season, what we don’t know is how many we need to take or can allow ourselves to take because of the cover we might need in other positions.

“This season he has not played as much. I’m sure he would have liked that to be different but we know the qualities he can bring. He is a player we enjoy working with and a character we enjoy having within the group.”

The winger joined City from Aston Villa for £100million in 2021, and he has since made 125 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals and providing 18 assists in that time.

He has also lifted three Premier League trophies, one FA Cup, one Champions League and a Club World Cup.
