‘Jadon Sancho to miss Club World Cup despite a month left on Chelsea deal’

Chelsea have chosen to move on without Jadon Sancho during their Club World Cup campaign despite having the option to do so.

After the Man United winger fell out with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, he completed a season-long loan move to Stamford Bridge in last summer’s transfer window.

However, the England international has endured a mixed time of things with Enzo Maresca‘s side, struggling to find consistent form.

There was recently a highlight for Sancho when he scored for Chelsea in the UEFA Conference League final win over Real Betis, though that will not be enough to keep him at the club.

Chelsea make further Jadon Sancho decision

Although there was an obligation to buy included in that loan deal, the Blues also had the option to pay a £5million penalty fee to send the winger back to Man United.

Earlier this week, Sancho posted a farewell message to Chelsea on Instagram, all but confirming they will indeed be taking up that option.

Even so, the 25-year-old’s loan deal with the club does not officially expire until 30 June, meaning he is eligible to feature in the group stages of the Club World Cup for Maresca’s side.

Chelsea play their first match of the tournament in the USA against Los Angeles FC on 16 June, before matches against Flamengo (20 June) and Esperance de Tunis (24 June).

According to a new update from The Mail though, the Blues will allow Sancho to skip the tournament, freeing him up to explore potential other moves this summer.

Man United to be relieved by Club World Cup update

Football Insider Verdict

Given he has never really nailed down a place at Stamford Bridge, it is understandable that they are willing to let Sancho miss the Club World Cup.

It is also worth noting the winger’s loan will expire before the latter stages, so it would have made little sense for Chelsea to take him for only half the tournament anyway.

The news that the Blues have made this decision not to take him is likely to go down rather well back at Old Trafford as well.

Man United will have seen their summer transfer plans impacted by Sancho’s return, given he is one player they look to have been planning on selling to raise funds for other signings.

Now that he is not going to the Club World Cup, that does at least give those involved more time to find a new move away from Old Trafford for the 2025/26 campaign and beyond.

That will help Sancho too in terms of preventing his career from stagnating with the Red Devils, and so this could be the best move for all involved.
