James Garner ‘in trouble’ as Everton star faces suspension for social media comments – ex-refs chief
James Garner will be lucky to avoid a suspension from the FA following his comments on social media about referee Farai Hallam.
That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Everton midfielder could be suspended and fined after the 2-2 draw with Brentford.
The 25-year-old was shown a yellow card just two minutes into the second half on Saturday, 11 April, punished for what he believed to be a perfectly-timed challenge on Dango Ouattara.
David Moyes’ side are pushing for European qualification, but the Toffees might have to be without one of their best players after he lashed out at the decision as the “worst” he’s ever been given.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee said: “It’s a judgment call. He’s fouled his opponent, so the level of action had to be determined. I think he’ll find himself in trouble.
“If a player makes a critical comment on social media about a referee’s action, the authorities have to take appropriate action. Has he done this before? Has he already been in trouble with the authorities?
“If not, he may get a letter of warning that says, ‘You’re not to do this’. But expect the potential for a fine and a suspension.
“We’ll agree and disagree with decisions, and he might be unhappy with his yellow card, but it’s not okay. There’s no chance to appeal against yellow cards, which might be why there’s a growing frustration.

“My advice to him is to stay on his feet when making a challenge. There’s less chance of a caution. On the ground, he’s out of control, and with the referee in a good position, he’s judged it as reckless.”

Despite Garner’s criticism of the referee, Hallam had a relatively good performance at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Hackett extremely pleased with his decisions.
There was the potential for Jordan Pickford to be sent off against Brentford, having taken out Kevin Schade in the opening three minutes, and home fans wanted more than a yellow card.
Instead of criticising the official, Hackett praised his no-nonsense approach and actually wants more referees to follow in his footsteps in the English Premier League.
Howard Webb’s officials have often been heavily criticised during the 2025-26 campaign, but Hallam appears to be growing in confidence, and rightly so.
