James Maddison hosted by English club amid misery at Tottenham blow

Tottenham attacking midfielder James Maddison has gone back to his former club after suffering a devastating Spurs blow at a crucial time.

What has been a dismal season for Ange Postecoglou‘s side still has the potential to end on an immense high for the North London outfit.

On Thursday (8 May), Tottenham beat Bodo/Glimt 2-0 in the second leg of their Europa League semi final tie.

That gave them a 5-1 win on aggregate, meaning Spurs could end a 17-year wait for a trophy if they beat Man United in the final in Bilbao on Wednesday 21 May.

However, one player who will be unable to play a part for the club as they look to do that is Maddison himself.

James Maddison returns to former club Coventry after injury

During the first leg of his side’s win over Bodo/Glimt, the England international was forced off 20 minutes into the second half with injury.

It has since been confirmed the 28-year-old will miss the rest of the season – and potentially the start of pre-season – due to a knee injury.

After his side’s second leg win this week, Maddison took to Instagram to reveal his devastation at not being able to contribute to Tottenham as they look to end their wait for silverware.

Even though the attacking midfielder now be out of action for some time, it seems he has not lost his appetite to follow the game.

On Friday night (9 May), Maddison took to his Instagram story to reveal his attendance at the CBS Arena, hosted by his former side for a meal and the game, as Coventry City took on Sunderland in the first leg of the Championship play-off semi finals.

Having started his senior career with the Sky Blues, making 42 first-team appearances for them, the Tottenham ace was keen to show his support for his first club.

Frank Lampard has done an excellent job as Coventry manager, but his side will have to overcome a 2-1 deficit to Sunderland in the second leg on Tuesday (13 May) if they are to reach the final later this month.

Tottenham injury blow is hugely disappointing

Football Insider Verdict

Having had to come through so many difficult moments this season, Maddison is now going to miss out on being directly involved in the moment that makes it worth it if they win the Europa League.

That will be extremely difficult to take for the 28-year-old, who will believe he has the ability to claim more major honours in his career.

Of course, Maddison is also a player who could have made a major difference for Tottenham when they face Man United in that final, given the quality he possesses.

As a result, there is going to also be concern about just what this injury blow might mean for their hopes of actually ending their wait for a trophy as it is.
