James Maddison laughs off Tottenham trophy dig to his face in new footage

Tottenham star James Maddison has been forced to respond head on to a savage jibe about his team’s Europa League title win.

The 2024/25 Premier League campaign was a dismal one for Ange Postecoglou‘s side, who lost 22 of their 38 league games on their way to a 17th place finish.

Even so, they were able to salvage the season late on, thanks to their exploits on the continental stage, with Tottenham beating Man United 1-0 in the Europa League final last Wednesday (21 May).

Not only did that end the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy, it also secured their Champions League qualification for the 2025/26 campaign, which may be vital come the summer transfer window.

John Terry has a rivalry with Tottenham from his Chelsea days

John Terry hits back at James Maddison

Heartbreakingly for him, Maddison was unable to play in that victory in the final for Tottenham due to an injury he sustained in the semi final win over Bodo/Glimt.

Even so, the attacking midfielder has certainly been revelling in his side’s success by taking aim at a number of critics.

Amid that, Maddison has exchanged digs on social media with former Chelsea captain John Terry, who has now been able to get his own back on the 28-year-old.

This week, Terry won a charity golf tournament organised by Maddison, which led to him being presented with a trophy on stage at the event by the Spurs ace, footage of which has now emerged on X.

After being handed a microphone to give a speech, the Chelsea icon took aim at the lack of recent success for Tottenham by immediately declaring: “By the way, it’s been a week and I’ve won the same amount of trophies as Spurs!”

With Maddison still stood next to him, the attacker reacted by bursting out laughing before the pair embraced, showing the good-humoured nature of the rivalry.

Tottenham must push on from Europa League success

Football Insider Verdict

Despite the disaster that was their Premier League campaign, these is still a big opportunity for Spurs over the course of this summer.

They now know they will be playing Champions League football next season, which will help them massively in the transfer window.

Tottenham are now likely to be able to both attract and afford better players than they would have done had they not secured that qualification for European football’s top competition.

As a result they really ought to put together a squad capable of ensuring they avoid the mess that they endured in the domestic competitions this season.

Even so, it still remains to be seen if manager Ange Postecoglou will be at Tottenham next season, and that is one area where clarity is still needed as they aim to plan for the coming campaign.
