James McAtee responds to Harvey Elliott amid Man City and Liverpool exit news

James McAtee has delivered a message to Harvey Elliott amid news that the duo could be leaving Manchester City and Liverpool, respectively.

McAtee captained the England Under-21s to their European Championship success, while Elliott was named player of the tournament after scoring five goals in six appearances.

But while both the Man City man and the Liverpool ace have enjoyed a historic time on international duty, they both struggled for game time in the Premier League last term.

McAtee and Elliott had a significant platform to showcase their quality in the Under-21 Euros, and the attacking midfielders have both been linked with moves away from the Etihad Stadium and Anfield, respectively.

McAtee made just three Premier League starts for Pep Guardiola’s side last season, while the fact that he has been left out of Man City’s Club World Cup squad further shows his lowly position in their pecking order.

Similarly, Elliott was named in Arne Slot’s starting 11 on just two occasions in the top-flight last season, amid fierce competition from the likes of Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai across the positions he can operate in.

But taking to Instagram on Sunday, 29 June, the Liverpool man celebrated England’s Under-21 Euro success by sharing a series of photos after the final.

McAtee commented: “Goat.”

This summer’s Under-21 Euros were a further endorsement of the ability McAtee and Elliott boast, despite the lack of minutes they have both endured at club level.

Former Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers chief scout, Mick Brown, exclusively informed Football Insider that Brighton are working on a deal for Elliott.

A move to the South Coast would be ideal for the 22-year-old, whose chances of enjoying more minutes for Liverpool next term have been heavily damaged by the high-profile arrival of ex-Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund are in the race for McAtee alongside a queue of other Bundesliga outfits.

Both McAtee and Elliott must consider their playing time when it comes to deciding whether to leave their current clubs ahead of next season.

This summer’s Under-21 Euros showcased what the duo can do on the international stage, while both may have their sights set on next year’s World Cup.
