James McClean reacts as Wrexham announce new signing

Wrexham are showing no signs of slowing down their transfer activity ahead of the Championship season.

The Red Dragons are vying to compete in the upper echelons of the second tier after winning three consecutive promotions.

Amid their efforts to ready their squad for the Championship, Wrexham are closing in on Josh Windass, who left Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer amid the Owls’ financial struggles.

Phil Parkinson’s men have already added the likes of Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward to their ranks, as they look to acclimatise to the second tier.

McClean reacts as Wrexham announce George Thomason signing

Parkinson has strengthened his midfield by signing George Thomason from League One outfit Bolton Wanderers.

The North Wales side announced via Instagram on Monday, 21 July: “Another bold move, Welcome to Wrexham, George Thomason.”

Wrexham’s post attracted a like from James McClean, who helped fire them to promotion by notching four goals and seven assists in League One last season.

Thomason is ready to make an impact in the Championship

The former Bolton captain was an outstanding performer for the Greater Manchester club last term, even though they failed to meet expectations by finishing eighth in League One.

Thomason could thrive at Wrexham

Thomason displayed his creative class by notching five goals and three assists in 46 appearances across all competitions for Wanderers last season.

Meanwhile, when Bolton reached the League One playoff final following a largely successful 2023/24 campaign, the 24-year-old produced an even better return of six goals and 10 assists in all competitions.

Thomason has only ever played for Steven Schumacher’s side, while his first season came in 2020/21, when he helped them clinch promotion from League Two to League One.

The 2022/23 EFL Trophy winner’s third-tier performances suggest that he is capable of bridging the gap to the Championship, along with Wrexham.

Parkinson’s men are set for the toughest challenge they have faced since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney became owners, but Thomason is set to add quality to their midfield.
