James Tavernier and Jack Butland respond as Vaclav Cerny bids ‘farewell’ to Rangers fans

Vaclav Cerny seemed to have already bid his farewell to Rangers supporters in a social media post.

Cerny has been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise underwhelming campaign for Rangers, with the club a distant 17 points behind champions Celtic.

The Czech winger’s loan spell from Wolfsburg is nearing its end, and there are currently no concrete talks over a permanent move.

While Rangers are interested in securing Cerny’s signature long-term, any progress is likely to be delayed until the anticipated takeover by 49ers Enterprises is completed.

With that uncertainty hanging over the club’s summer plans, the winger had appeared to hint at his departure following the final fixture of the season at Ibrox— a gesture that looked very much like a farewell to supporters.

Vaclav Cerny waves goodbye to Rangers fans in final Ibrox appearance

Following Rangers’ 3-1 win over Dundee United, Cerny lingered on the pitch after the final whistle, offering emotional waves and gestures towards the Ibrox crowd. The winger also touched the badge on his shirt — a clear signal that this may have been his last appearance at the stadium.

Shortly after the match, he posted on Instagram: “Memories forever! Thank you Ibrox.”

The post drew reactions from several teammates, including Jack Butland, Ianis Hagi and club captain James Tavernier, who all showed their appreciation by liking the post.

Cerny has enjoyed an impressive campaign at Rangers, scoring 18 goals and providing nine assists across all competitions.

However, a permanent move remains uncertain. Back in March, Cerny’s agent confirmed that no deal with Rangers was close, and hinted that other teams have also expressed interest in the Czech international.

Rangers look to bring Steven Gerrard back amid managerial search

As questions remain over the future of key players, uncertainty also surrounds the managerial position at Rangers. The club has yet to confirm a permanent appointment Barry Ferguson’s interim spell comes to an end.

However, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Rangers are set to intensify efforts to reappoint Steven Gerrard as head coach.

Gerrard previously led the side to an unbeaten title-winning season in 2021 — their first Scottish Premiership triumph in a decade.

While Cerny’s future hangs in the balance, securing a long-term manager appears to be the current focus for the Ibrox hierarchy.
