James Tavernier: Campbell issues two-word verdict on Rangers ‘problem’ after reveal

Kevin Campbell has backed James Tavernier in rubbishing suggestions Rangers have a mentality issue.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker suggested it’s too simple to diagnose Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side with a mentality problem after dropping points against Motherwell.

The Gers missed the chance to close the gap on Celtic on Sunday after throwing away a two-goal lead against Graham Alexander’s side at Ibrox.

The shock result came just three days after Rangers knocked Borussia Dortmund out of the Europa League.

As quoted by the Daily Record (28 February), club captain James Tavernier refuted suggestions that his side are wilting under the pressure.

He insisted “there’s no questioning” his side’s mental strength.

When asked by Football Insider if he believed Rangers had a mentality problem, Campbell issued two words: “No way.”

He added: “It is not complacency. This is football. These kind of results can happen.

“Yes, they knocked Dortmund out of the Europa League but that does not mean you cannot drop points in the Scottish Premiership. It’s totally different.

Rangers

“When the likes of Motherwell play Rangers, it is their big game. They will never lie down, not even if Rangers go two up. In that situation, as it is so often said, the next goal is key. Teams are going to ask questions.

“Anything can happen in football. Should Rangers have won? Of course they should have. But it does not mean that they have a mentality issue. I don’t think they disrespect other teams. I don’t think that’s the problem.”

In other news, Kieran Maguire has claimed Rangers and Celtic are pushing for a seven-figure deal the rest of SPFL will hate.
