‘James Tavernier should be binned by Rangers’ after latest news at Ibrox

Rangers are expected to finalise the loan signing of Max Aarons in the coming days – their second transfer deal of the summer so far.

Lyall Cameron has already finalised a free transfer switch to Ibrox after the expiry of his deal with Dundee.

According to Sky Sports (24 June), Bournemouth right-back Aarons has completed a medical and will join on a season-long deal with no option to buy.

Rangers captain James Tavernier, Dujon Sterling and Neraysho Kasanwirjo are the current right-back options available to new boss Russell Martin.

However, Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – expects Tavernier to move on after 10 years with Rangers.

Martin should ‘reset’ and get Tavernier out of Rangers, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted there will be offers for the 33-year-old and urged Martin to take the chance to “reset” his squad.

The Englishman is only under contract at Ibrox for a further 12 months after penning his last extension in 2022.

Wyness insisted it would be difficult for skipper Tavernier to stay and provide cover.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think Aarons is a great signing for Rangers.

“It’s great that Russell’s managed to get him up there.

“In terms of James Tavernier, he was the captain, he knows the dressing room, and could he play centre half as well as right back? It’s yet to be seen.

“He could be cover in the defence in that sense, but I think it’s probably best if they move him on.

“I think there is a bit of a fresh broom coming in. They’ve got to take a chance now and Russell’s got to take a chance to reset to a degree.

“He’s going to have to keep some of those quality players where he can and not do a complete clean sweep, but I think Tavernier could be the one that could be going. I think there’ll be offers for him.

“Rangers should take what they can and move him on at this stage, unless as I say, they keep him as cover. But I think he’d be expensive cover. It’s difficult for a captain to do that kind of role.”

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (24 June) that QPR have agreed to sign Peterborough attacker Kwame Poku after hijacking Glasgow Rangers’ deal.

Scottish giants Rangers were hopeful of winning the race for the player’s signature at the end of his Posh contract.

But the 23-year-old is set for a medical at the London club as he heads in for final talks to complete the move.
