Jamie Carragher reacts to Liverpool defeat to Southampton

By Alex Stevens

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Jurgen Klopp will be thankful the League Cup semi-final is a two-legged affair after Liverpool’s display against Southampton on Wednesday night.

The Merseyside giants were beaten 1-0 in the first leg of the tie at St Mary’s Stadium despite fielding a full-strength team.

Klopp’s side were completely outplayed by the hosts as they produced one of their worst displays of the season.

Liverpool legend Carragher took to his personal Twitter account after the match to give his verdict and claimed the German manager will be “ecstatic” that another leg gives his side the chance to banish the memories of the opening leg.

The second leg will take place at Anfield in a fortnight’s time as Liverpool aim to reach their third final in a year under Klopp.

The Merseysiders, who are flying high in the Premier League and challenging for the title, have a formidable record at their home ground this season.

In nine league matches at Anfield, Klopp’s side have won seven and drawn the other two, scoring a remarkable 26 goals and conceding just seven.

Liverpool are now preparing to face bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday as they return to Premier League action.

In other Liverpool news, the club have made a big move to sign a striker this month, with Klopp personally making the call to smooth through the deal.
