‘Jamie Vardy will score goals for fun at Rangers, this breaks all the rules’

Jamie Vardy has a big decision to make this summer after leaving Leicester City, and there is no shortage of options in front of him as he ponders his next move.

The 38-year-old is now a free agent after the curtain fell on his 13-year association with the Foxes – a spell which saw him famously lift the Premier League trophy in 2016 as well as the FA Cup five years later.

According to the Mirror (2 June), Vardy is weighing up an offer from Rangers – a move which could see him play Champions League football once again.

Interest from Major League Soccer and the Saudi Pro League could yet sway Vardy’s thinking over the coming weeks, but one man in particular thinks Vardy would be a “perfect fit” at Ibrox.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on the forward’s potential move north of the border.

‘Jamie Vardy would shine at Rangers – he’d score goals for fun’

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Vardy’s character would suit Scottish football, and he’d be an ideal frontman as the The Gers look to close the gap on Glasgow rivals Celtic.

The club are set to announce former Southampton boss Russell Martin as their new manager in the coming days, and Wyness has already identified an ideal first signing for the 39-year-old Englishman.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It would go against all my rules, but I would say for Rangers, Jamie Vardy is a perfect fit.

“I think Scottish football would not be too distressing for him. I think he would shine, and they’d save him for the big games against the top clubs.

“He can perform. I think he would be a real goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership and he’d love it.

“He’s a character as well, and I think he’d fit in well in Scotland – he’d score goals for fun up there.

“For Rangers, for the next couple of seasons while they rebuild, I think he’s a great stop-gap measure.

“I don’t know what his commercial demands will be, but I think he’d fancy it for a season or two as well.”

Rangers transfer plan revealed after ‘£20m’ confirmed news

Meanwhile, Rangers’ new owners are expected to make big transfer funds available to their new head coach this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh completed their majority buyout at Ibrox last week (31 May) and confirmed they will invest £20million via a share issue.

It is believed the majority of that money will be reflected in the transfer budget for their new manager – thought to be Martin – to spend this summer.
