Jan Aage Fjortoft: This is what Tottenham are brilliant at

By Harry Sykes

Tottenham have been praised by TV pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft for their “brilliant” work at extending the contracts of 10 squad players over the last few months.

Jan Vertonghen became the latest Spurs player to pen a new deal on Friday morning when he signed with the club until 2019.

This comes just 24 hours after Tottenham announced that talisman Harry Kane had reached a formal agreement on a new six-year contract.

In total, 10 senior White Hart Lane players have penned news deals this season, with Kyle Walker, Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Danny Rose, Kevin Wimmer, Harry Winks and Tom Carroll also signing extended terms.

Former Middlesbrough striker Fjortoft, who works as a Premier League and Bundesliga pundit in addition to advising the football association in his native Norway, has been impressed by Spurs’ strategy of tying their leading young players to long-term agreements.

“Tottenham [are] working strategically brilliant now,” Fjortoft said on his personal Twitter account on Friday. “Now the market will pay big fees for players if they should go”.

Spurs have been busy behind their scenes after they clinched third place in the Premier League and challenged strongly for the title last season.

They returned to the Champions League this season but exited the competition at the group stage following a series of unconvincing performances.

Nevertheless, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are fifth in the Premier League this season and only lost their unbeaten record when they were defeated 2-1 by bitter rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last Saturday.

In other Tottenham news, the club have been hit by a major injury blow ahead of their clash against Swansea.
