Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta react to Edson Alvarez’s message
West Ham United’s season to forget has culminated with one of their out-of-form players becoming a CONCACAF Gold Cup winner.
Graham Potter will welcome his West Ham squad back to Rush Green for pre-season training this week, as they look to improve on a turgid campaign which saw them languish in lower mid-table throughout.
The Irons only twice ended a round of matches outside places 13 to 17 in the Premier League table last season, but Potter’s squad has only seen two new additions so far, one of whom is Jean-Clair Todibo.
Todibo’s season-long loan from Nice has been made permanent for £32million, and the free transfer of Celtic striker Daniel Cummings is the only other summer move West Ham have been able to complete.

West Ham duo respond to Alvarez’s Mexico message
West Ham’s dismal 2024–25 season saw several of their biggest names underperform massively, and Edson Alvarez was one player who drew significant criticism from fans after his indisciplined displays.
Alvarez was sent off in two separate matches for second yellow cards last season, and as a result made just 20 Premier League starts after failing to impress under Potter or his predecessor Julen Lopetegui.
However, the 27-year-old has put his poor domestic form behind him while on international duty this summer, and scored the winning goal as Mexico beat the USA to win the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Alvarez also won man-of-the-match after his 77th-minute winner in El Tri’s 2-1 victory, and posted on Instagram at full-time (6 July) with the message of; “AMOR FATI”, meaning “love of fate” in Latin.
West Ham’s official account congratulated Alvarez in the comments section as Irons attackers Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta also left their tributes, with the latter calling Alvarez his “brother”.
Alvarez exit still on the cards for West Ham
Football Insider Verdict
Although West Ham could do the unthinkable and sell Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham this summer, his former Ajax team-mate Alvarez could be another player whom Potter deems surplus to requirements.
Monaco were in talks to sign Alvarez in the January transfer window but never followed through on their interest, yet the Mexican’s lack of game-time under Potter suggests that he could be sold this summer.
Alvarez isn’t alone among players with an uncertain future at West Ham, and many fans will hope that his performances at the Gold Cup can help to raise much-needed funds, with last summer’s £130million outlay unlikely to be repeated.
