Jean-Philippe Mateta: What failed medical means for new Crystal Palace valuation and summer transfer

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s value at Crystal Palace is not expected to drop off massively before the summer transfer window.

That is according to former Everton, Aston Villa and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, who exclusively told Football Insider that he believes the striker will be back among the goals soon enough, which will help save his value.

The 28-year-old looked certain to leave Selhurst Park in the winter transfer window before a move to AC Milan collapsed due to a medical issue.

Keith Wyness: Crystal Palace’s valuation of Jean-Philippe Mateta won’t dip massively

For Mateta, he may struggle to get back into the Palace team once he is fit.

Not only has the striker burnt many bridges with the fan base by requesting a transfer, but the arrival of record-signing Jorgen Strand Larsen has caused further complications.

Therefore, a move away in the summer seems likely, and speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained that he believes the France international will be back among the goals soon at Palace, which will save his price tag.

He said: “Well, as we speak, of course, his valuation would be down, there’s no doubt about it. But apparently it wasn’t that major a problem from what I understand.

“He could be back reasonably soon. Now, if he is coming back, Mateta scoring again, then of course the price is back up because he’s had a nice little rest and he’s back in and he’s banging the goals. He’s proven he can do it. And we all know strikers are the most sought-after.

“So I think there should be, you know, it all depends, of course, on the medical diagnosis. And I have no idea what that is.

“But provided he does come back and there’s every reason to believe he will, I think, you know, by the summer, his valuation will be back as to where it was before.

“So I don’t expect too big a knock on the valuation for Palace at this time.”

When is Mateta back from injury?

As it stands, Oliver Glasner has not given an exact date when Mateta is due to be back out on the pitch for Palace.

However, the manager has confirmed that he will not need surgery, boosting hopes of a quick return for the striker.

Speaking to The Athletic on 10 February, Glasner stated: “He doesn’t need surgery. The injury is not as bad as feared. The opinion from several doctors and specialists is that we can deal with the knee in a better way than surgery.

“He will miss certain times, so I can’t say two weeks, three weeks, four weeks but he doesn’t need surgery so that’s very positive and hopefully he’s back soon.

“It’s been a disappointment but he’s looking forward to the next months. It’s good for him there is a final decision which he took with the recommendations of all the specialists and our medical department. He will do the next rehab here at the training ground.

“When there is a lot of noise around the players, very often they don’t perform on their top level in different situations. It’s important for him, it’s clear he will be a Crystal Palace player at least until summer. Right now he doesn’t need surgery so it’s clear what he needs to do in the next couple of weeks. Clarity is the most important thing.”
