Jermaine Pennant makes ‘distraught’ Harvey Elliott Liverpool exit admission

Jermaine Pennant has weighed in on the news that Harvey Elliott could be leaving Liverpool ahead of next season.

Football Insider exclusively revealed that Elliott has rejected a move to Nottingham Forest from the Premier League champions.

But the England Under-21 international made just 18 Premier League appearances this season, and could be keen to enjoy more game time.

Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz’s Liverpool arrival could force Elliott’s exit, as the German’s signature will come as yet more stern competition.

Pennant tips Elliott to leave Liverpool

Elliott was handed just two Premier League starts by Arne Slot this season, but scored and assisted during a 3-2 defeat at Brighton on 19 May when he was named in the Dutchman’s starting lineup.

Meanwhile, speaking live on talkSPORT [1 June], former Liverpool man Pennant said: “I think we’ll see the last of Elliott, because after the final game of the season he looked distraught, like he already knew the time was coming to an end.”

Since joining the Reds from Fulham back in 2019, the 22-year-old has made over 140 appearances for the Merseyside club despite spending the 2020/21 season on loan with Championship Blackburn Rovers.

Football Insider verdict

Elliott should leave Liverpool

As mentioned by Pennant, Elliott appeared tearful after Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on the final day of their Premier League title-clinching season on 25 May.

But making an Anfield exit is the right thing for the England youth international to do, as he already sits behind Dominik Szoboszlai in Slot’s pecking order.

The imminent arrival of Wirtz, who is more of a natural attacking midfielder than the Hungary international, will only further reduce Elliott’s game time.

While Elliott has now won two Premier League titles with Liverpool, as well as winning the Carabao Cup twice, and the FA Cup, he must now move to a club where he will enjoy more regular minutes, which will help him further develop and could even boost his chances of featuring for England in next summer’s World Cup.

Meanwhile, former Brentford boss Martin Allen exclusively told Liverpool News he expects the Reds to block interest in Andy Robertson.
