Jimmy Nicholl: This top-flight boss should be the next Rangers manager, identfies win against Celtic

Jimmy Nicholl believes Rangers should appoint St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright as their next manager.

Former defender Nicholl also stated that the 53-year-old has the experience of beating clubs such as Celtic which would help the struggling club.

The Gers parted company with Mark Warburton at the start of this month with the club announcing that he has resigned from his post.

However, the former Championship manager revealed that he did not hand in his resignation as Rangers are now looking for his successor.

Top-flight boss Wright has currently guided St Johnstone to fifth in the Scottish Premiership table with the former goalkeeper beating Celtic at the end of the last campaign.

Former Gers man Nicholl believes Wright should replace Warburton in the Ibrox dugout as he explained the reasons why he would suit the club at this moment in time.

“I think it’s terrible that people think he’s not fashionable enough. I just can’t work that out,” Nicholl’s told the Daily Mail. “Here’s a fellow right under your nose that’s done an outstanding job in Scottish football with a hardcore support of a few thousand.

“People have to recognise that and take on board what he gets out of those players. What’s he doing on the training ground and in the dressing room that continually gets results?

“Rangers need someone the players are going to listen to, who can get them in a shape, get organised and go and win a game of football.

‘Tommy knows exactly what Scottish football is like, how to shape a team that can win at Celtic Park and Pittodrie. He’s been through it all. He knows how to recover from setbacks. You really need that to do the job.”

Wright’s team are currently six points behind Ranges in the SPL table having picked up two draws against the Glasgow-based club this season.

If Wright were to move to Ibrox then he would be tasked in closing the mammoth points gap currently opened up by the club’s Old Firm rivals.

Brendan Rodgers side are an incredible 30 points ahead of the managerless third-placed team as they are set to clinch the SPL title in record fashion.
