Joao Gomes is ‘perfect Liverpool signing’ and ‘door could open to deal’

Liverpool are targeting a move to sign Wolves star Joao Gomes as they look to strengthen their midfield, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that, if Wolves are relegated at the end of this season, the “door could open” for Liverpool to do a deal.

The threat of relegation and ongoing financial difficulties at Molineux mean they could be forced into a sale in the summer, with clubs lining up to capitalise on any developments.

The 23-year-old is viewed as the “perfect signing” for the Reds as his age, ability on the ball, creativity, and tough-tackling style fits the profile they have been looking for.

This comes after former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Man United and Liverpool are both perusing a move to sign Gomes.

However, any deal for the Brazilian’s signature is not expected to take place this month as he remains a key player for Vitor Pereira’s side in their fight against relegation.

Liverpool backed to land deal to sign Wolves’ Joao Gomes

As things stand, Wolves are outside the relegation zone on goals scored as they are level with 18th-placed Ipswich both on points and goal-difference.

Back-to-back 3-0 defeats against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle have put a dampener on what was an impressive upturn in form after Pereira’s appointment.

Now, many at Molineux are fearing relegation once again, while clubs continue to monitor the likes of Gomes and Matheus Cunha for potential moves in the summer.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with the midfielder after missing out on a deal to sign Martin Zubimendi – who now looks set to join Arsenal in the summer.

The central midfield position has been a concern under Arne Slot given their lack of depth behind Ryan Gravenberch and Liverpool are now weighing up their options in the transfer market.
