Joe Aribo cited as Rangers make move to sign red-hot striker – expert

Ross Stewart is “too far out of budget” for Rangers.

That’s according to former Gers defender Alan Hutton, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about their interest in Sunderland striker Stewart.

On Monday (19 December), sources told this site that Sunderland have placed a £10m price tag on the 26-year-old ahead of his contract expiring next summer.

The Championship club have the option to extend the forward’s deal by another 12 months but are facing an uphill battle to keep hold of him.

The Light Blues have registered their interest in Stewart as they prepare for the potential exit of Alfredo Morelos.

The Colombian’s contract expires in the summer and the Glasgow giants are worried they could lose him for free.

But Hutton suggested Stewart is not the player the Gers should be spending money on.

I just believe it is too far out of budget at this moment in time,” he told Football Insider.

You look at the money Rangers have brought in, the sale of [Joe] Aribo and [Calvin] Bassey, the European run, the Champions League money and they have still spent nowhere near that for one player.

Rangers

I think for somebody to come in it is has to be a player that is going to come in and really set the heather alight and give them something.

I think Stewart is a good player, he is a goalscorer. But will he be the main man for the next four or five seasons? I do not think so.
