Joe Gomez to 'be axed by Liverpool' after he's found wanting - Whelan
Noel Whelan has insisted bringing Joel Matip back into the Liverpool lineup in place of Joe Gomez is “an easy decision to make” after the Englishman’s horror show against Napoli.
The former Leeds striker was speaking exclusively to Football Insider in the build-up to the Reds’ second group stage match at home against Ajax on Tuesday (13 September).
Gomez was hooked at half-time after a mistake-laden display during last week’s (7 September) 4-1 away defeat for Liverpool against Napoli in the Champions League.
The England international was replaced by Matip, who had been out for almost a month with a groin injury sustained in training.
Gomez signed a fresh five-year deal at Anfield in July despite making just 12 starts across all competitions last season.
Whelan claimed the former Charlton ace’s performance in Italy has made bringing Matip back in a “simple choice”.

When asked if Gomez has done enough to keep his place, he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “No. Absolutely not.
“Not after his performance against Napoli. I think bringing Matip in is a no-brainer, a simple choice.
“Even though Gomez has done ok with Matip out – the Champions League game just looked far too much for him.
“He wasn’t at his best and really didn’t cover himself in glory with his defending, passing, or positional sense.
“I think he’s made it a very easy choice for Jurgen Klopp. If he’d have had a stormer, then it would’ve been different – but it’s an easy decision to make.”
