Joe Rodon is the Wales beacon, his recent Leeds stats are key to World Cup dream

Joe Rodon has been one of Leeds’ standout performers this season and will be looking to take that form with him on international duty with Wales.

Craig Bellamy has been praising Rodon both on and away from international duties with Wales.

The Whites have not had a straightforward start to life back in the English top-flight, but the centre-back has been one of their most consistent men.

Prior to winning the 2024-25 Championship, Football Insider’s transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke picked out Rodon as a Premier League standard defender, a compliment which is certainly valid based on his current trajectory.

Rodon defensive strengths on display for Leeds

Nottingham Forest beat Leeds 3-1 on 9 November as questions were aimed at Daniel Farke over his lack of depth in the Premier League.

Yet, on what was a frustrating afternoon for the Peacocks, the Wales international stood out with a solid display.

The number six picked up the ball on 95 occasions, completing 66 of his 80 passes as he sought to encourage the Whites to fight back after giving up the lead.

Moreover, the ex-Tottenham man was eye-catching defensively, winning two of his three ground duels as well as making five clearances.

Wales fight to keep World Cup dreams alive

Bellamy will be calling on the experience of the 28-year-old to carry the Dragons to victory in their final two World Cup qualifying matches, particularly with the absence of Ben Davies.

Following the frustrating defeat to Belgium on 13 October, topping the group will prove to be difficult provided the current league leaders win one of their final two matches.

The Welsh take on Liechtenstein on 15 November before a crunch clash against North Macedonia that will determine who will secure second and proceed to the play-offs.

Bellamy’s side will feel they have the advantage, taking on North Macedonia at the Cardiff City Stadium in front of a bustling home crowd.

Failure to secure a play-off spot will not be the end of the world, as Wales can also qualify for the World Cup through the Nations League.
