Leeds forward Joel Piroe took to social media to praise teammate Illan Meslier after their 2-0 Championship win over Coventry on Wednesday (February 5).

Both Piroe, 25, and Meslier, 24, had starring roles as Daniel Farke’s side extended their lead at the top of the Championship table to five points.

Piroe opened the scoring for Leeds at The Coventry Building Society Arena after just 17 minutes, thanks to a lovely ball from in-form winger Manor Solomon.

Jayden Bogle scored their second soon after, running through Coventry’s defence before capitalising on a miscommunication between the goalkeeper and a defender to secure all three points for the West Yorkshire club.

Meslier was in fine form in the win over Coventry, ending his game having made four saves, an 80 per cent pass accuracy rate, and six recoveries.

Football Insider revealed (January 6) that Leeds have already begun working on signing a new goalkeeper amid growing concerns about Illan Meslier’s performances.

Piroe has established himself as Farke’s preferred number nine option, starting 22 of his 32 games across all competitions, scoring 13 goals, and providing five assists in his 1917 minutes of action.

Many fans remain unconvinced, however, taking to social media to tear into Piroe and another of Leeds’ star players.

Meslier, another player who has caught plenty of stick this season, remains the club’s number one, starting all 31 of his games across all competitions, conceding 19 goals, and keeping 19 clean sheets in his 2790 minutes on the field.

The French goalkeeper took to Instagram to celebrate the win over Frank Lampard’s Coventry with a series of images from the game, to which Piroe responded: “Like a cat.”

Fellow Yorkshire club Sheffield United have the chance to cut Leeds’ lead at the top of the Championship table to two points when they face Portsmouth on Saturday (February 8).

Farke’s attention will be away from the Championship that weekend as they prepare for a visit from rivals Millwall in the FA Cup.
