Former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has claimed that he has heard rumours that a takeover at St James’ Park will still go through.
Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley have been widely reported to be negotiating with one another for the past few months, however reports in January suggested that any deal was dead in the water.
The major sticking point appears to be the price that Ashley is willing to sell the club for, but Barton has claimed that it’s likely to eventually go ahead.
“I’ve heard that’s still happening and that it’s still rumbling on. I think it’ll get done,” he said on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast show on TalkSport on Monday morning.
Newcastle fans have been praying that Ashley finally leaves the club after over 10 years that have been plagued with controversy and mis-management leading to two relegations from the Premier League.
Football Insider verdict
Although this is claimed by Barton, this will be music to the ears of Newcastle fans, who are desperate to see Ashley back up his bags and leave St James’ Park once and for all. The businessman’s presence in the North-East has been nothing but toxic and the Magpies can really kick on and progress under new leadership. Since arriving back in the Premier League, Rafa Benitez has had a near-impossible job of improving the squad on a shoe-string budget, despite Ashley promising him full financial backing after lifting the Championship title last year.
In other Newcastle United news, this £40,000-a-week Magpies player is in the form of his life but Benitez should bin him in the summer.
