John Barnes makes shock decisions in Tottenham v Liverpool combined XI
By Russell Edge
Former Liverpool attacker John Barnes has picked six Tottenham players in his combined XI with Liverpool.
The two sides are set to go head-to-head at Wembley on Sunday, both coming off the back of impressive Champions League results.
Tottenham managed to hold reigning champions Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu, while Liverpool managed to break the record for the biggest away win by an English side in the competition’s history, thrashing Slovenian side Maribor 7-0.
As a result, former Red Barnes has been as even as possible with his combined XI for the London Evening Standard, with six Tottenham and five Liverpool players, although there are a couple of shock decisions included.
One such decision is to name Christian Eriksen as a central midfielder, despite having been utilised as an attacking midfielder for the entirety of his Tottenham career.

Spurs understandably dominate at the back following their impressive defensive performances both last season and this campaign, with Hugo Lloris, Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen – playing at left back – joined by Joel Matip.
Eriksen lines up in a central midfield role alongside Georginio Wijnaldum, while the majority of attacking roles are taken by Liverpool players, with Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah lining up behind sole striker Harry Kane.
Tottenham currently sit third in the Premier League table, five points behind league leaders Manchester City, while Liverpool are four points behind in eighth.
