John Hartson claims Rangers are too reliant on this player
By Dominic Toner
John Hartson believes that Rangers have become over-reliant on veteran forward Kenny Miller.
The 37-year-old has become a crucial player for Mark Warburton this season and cemented his place in the starting line-up.
He has managed to move ahead of the likes of Martyn Waghorn and £1.5million signing Joe Garner in the pecking order, despite being at the latter stages of his career.
The striker was unable to help the Gers slip to a crushing 4-1 away defeat to Hearts on Wednesday, which leaves them 25 points behind runaway leaders Celtic.
Ex-Celtic striker Hartson feels that Rangers have become too reliant on veteran attacker Miller and should have better options in their squad to choose from.
“In the last couple of months, Kenny Miller has papered over the cracks at Rangers with his goals,” Hartson wrote in the Scottish Sun. “But for as good a player as he is, you have to question why they’re so reliant on a 37-year-old striker?
“After signing 11 players during the summer, Kenny is the man who has bailed the manager out time and again with crucial goals.”
Miller has been in strong form this season in front of goal, scoring eight goals and supplying four assists in 29 appearances.
The Scotsman has been used in several position along the frontline and been one of the most consistent performers in the side.
Warburton will hope that Miller can inspire a dramatic comeback for Rangers on Saturday, when they host Ross County at Ibrox in the league.
The Gers are now involved in a fascinating battle with Aberdeen for second-place and unfortunately are likely to continue relying on the goal contribution from the experienced Miller.
In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton used a brutal word to describe the club’s defeat to Hearts.
