John McGinn sends humorous message to Marco Asensio after Aston Villa reveal

John McGinn took to nostalgia in a message for Marco Asensio on social media following his impressive performances for Aston Villa.

Aston Villa extended their winning run to seven matches after a commanding 3-0 victory over Brighton on 2 April.

Despite a goalless first half, it was the January signings who took control in the second, with Marcus Rashford, Asensio and Donyell Malen all finding the net in a dominant display.

The win could have been even more emphatic, as former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett claimed Aston Villa were denied a clear penalty following a contentious foul on Jacob Ramsey.

McGinn struggled to make an impact in midfield but had little to worry about thanks to the clinical performance from Villa’s attacking line.

He later shared a post dedicated to goalscorer Asensio, referencing the former Real Madrid star’s past on social media.

John McGinn pokes fun at Marco Asensio amid Aston Villa permanent deal update

Asensio has been in outstanding form since arriving at Villa Park in January, netting eight goals already and quickly becoming a fan favourite. McGinn couldn’t help but poke fun that he is now playing alongside the Spanish international.

The Villa captain dug up an old tweet from 2017 where he simply wrote “Asensio” with heart eyes, and quoted it on 2 April with: “This is a bit weird” – a nod to how far things have come with the 29-year-old, now his teammate.

That quality hasn’t gone unnoticed at the club either. Mick Brown told Football Insider that Aston Villa are “almost certain” to make Asensio’s move permanent this summer, with a fee of around £15 million being discussed.

Aston Villa fans are also eager for the club to act fast, with Asensio proving to be a key addition in their push for a top-four finish.

Aston Villa pushing for Marcus Rashford permanent signing despite wage demands

Alongside Asensio, Aston Villa are also keen to sign Rashford on a permanent basis following his resurgence under Unai Emery.

The Manchester United loanee has found form again since making the switch, but his £350,000-a-week wages could be a stumbling block.

Football Insider revealed that Rashford would need to take a pay cut in order to complete a move to the Midlands club this summer.

As the club continues to build towards finishing in a Champions League spot, locking in both Asensio and Rashford could be pivotal to their ambitions.
