John Stones faces extended spell out of Man City XI after what pundit has seen

Kevin Campbell has claimed Nathan Ake could keep John Stones out of the Man City XI if his form continues.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said Ake, 27, was “excellent” against West Ham on Sunday.

The Netherlands international helped Pep Guardiola’s side keep a clean sheet in a 2-0 win at the London Stadium.

Stones was an unused substitute against the Hammers.

When asked by Football Insider if Ake could keep Stones out of the side if his impressive form continues, Campbell said: “Of course he can.

“City kept a clean sheet in what was a superb performance. I thought Ake was excellent, I really did. He did not put a foot wrong.

“Let’s be honest, West Ham are a difficult side to play against. They are not easy at all. They can cause problems for any team with the forward players they have got.

“Ake and [Ruben] Dias marshalled the defence really well. Their passing and defending was excellent.

“Ake could keep the others out if he continues like this.

“It is all about the squad though. Ake is so versatile.

“He can play as a full-back or even in midfield. Pep might need to move him around at times. Well done to him, to be fair.”
